Sunderland will be hosting a day of events for families and children of all ages on Saturday 8th March 2008.

Activities inspired by the exhibitions in AV Festival 08 will be taking place at the following galleries and museums: Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, Design Centre at Sunderland University and the Reg Vardy Gallery.

Artists will be on hand throughout the day to help young people make wild and wonderful creations in the following sessions:

Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Fawcett St.

The Saturday Art Club will be in the Education Room between 10am – 12noon and 1pm – 3pm. This is a regular group for 8 – 14 year olds which meet every Saturday in term time. It costs £2.50 per two-hour session and is open to new members.

The Drawing Room will be open between 10am – 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 3.30pm for parents and children of any age to drop in and enjoy arts activities for free. This Saturday, the workshop will relate to the exhibition showing film footage from the 2006 World Cup.

Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens

Wild Sounds is a free (ticketed) sound recording workshop inspired by the ‘Whispering in the Leaves’ sound installation in the Winter Gardens. Taking place between 10.30 – 12noon, tickets can be collected at 10am from the museum reception. This workshop is suitable for children aged over 7.

Reg Vardy Gallery

Artists Dominic Smith and Lesley Cooperwaite will be looking at the Joyce Hinterding exhibition and helping young people record the sounds in the gallery and its surrounds. These will then be edited on a laptop and later transformed into a vinyl recording.
This sound workshop is for 8 – 14 year olds, and will take place between 10.30am – 12.30pm.

The Design Centre at Sunderland University

Children aged over 7 can have a go at animating and enjoy a tour round a real film studio with animator Melanie Hani. The animation workshop takes place between 1.30 – 3.30pm. Booking is essential, please contact 0191 5152114.
