This ground-breaking Ken Loach TV drama waswatched by a quarter of the UK population on its first broadcast. It tells the story of an aspirational young woman whose life slides into homelessness and poverty. The television broadcast sparked questions in parliament about the welfare state's role in protecting the vulnerable, and helped boost the launch of the housing charity Shelter. It remains one of the UK' s best examples of how television can enact social change, and is still a catalyst for modern-day debate on social policy.
