The Festival exhibition takes place in five venues across Newcastle and Gateshead, featuring work by nine artists with four new commissions. Each work answers the question ‘Meanwhile, what about Socialism?’ using different strategies in dialogue across multiple countries and political landscapes, often drawing on the artist’s direct experience of a place, people and protagonists. Works bear witness to or unravel untold stories, lost histories, social injustices, private meetings, ongoing wars and personal survival – whilst simultaneously offering alternative futures to neoliberalism.
