Monday 24 March

Sat 1 March 2014 – Sun 2 March 2014

Our opening weekend introduces the Festival theme of extraction through a series of special concerts, film screenings, performances, talks and guided tours.

It highlights the work of sound artist Akio Suzuki with site specific performances at the Castle Keep, a duo with Aki Onda at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, and a guided tour of his oto-date sites across Newcastle. The weekend also sees the start of our Festival focus on Chinese filmmaker Wang Bing.

Films by The Otolith Group and Michael Show connect the geologic and cinematic, revealing the natural landscape in new ways. This is continued by the world premiere of a new 16mm performance by America artist Bruce McClure, which brings to life Robert Smithson’s 1971 proposal for a truly underground cinema cavern.
