AV FESTIVAL 14: DIGGING FOR SOUND
Fri 14 2014 – Sun 16 March 2014
Fri 21 2014 – Sun 23 March 2014

These two weekends of new commissions, concerts and walks focus on the geology of North East England, from the lead mining landscape of the North Pennines to Neolithic rock art in Northumberland and the Whin Sill of ancient black dolerite stone along the coast.

Some of the UK’s most exciting musicians have responded to the geology and topography of this landscape, with five world premieres of new work by Lee Patterson, Rhodri Davies & John Butcher, Common Objects, Chris Watson and Richard Skelton.

The commissions are accompanied by two screenings of films by Pat Collins about landscape, sound and memory. The filmmaker is present to discuss the films with the sound recordists Chris Watson and Susan Stenger.
