The UK premiere of Serra Pelada follows its recent debut at the Rio International Film Festival. In the 1980s, at the heart of the Amazon forest, 115 thousand men dug up 100 tons of gold and carried it on their backs up a 150-metre high mountain. Serra Pelada was one of the largest mines in the world, made famous by Sebastião Salgado’s photography. Today it is a deep lake, surrounded by conflict, rivalry and myth; whilst underneath there is still a slab of gold. Victor Lopes documents this legendary gold rush in scenes of almost biblical proportion.
