This solo exhibition brought together film, object and canvas, each addressing time, space and landscape in different ways. The exhibition included a large-scale sea painting, created through dispersing by hand mineral pigments onto a canvas that is submerged in the sea, then pulled onto the sand. Colour is directed onto the canvas by the movement of sand, wind, salt and water, with the place and date of its making given in the title. This approach is parallel to the way narrative is gradually revealed through gestural improvisation in the artist’s films. The rolls of canvas could be interpreted as rolls of analogue film, with the pigment equivalent to film grain. Shot in rapidly shifting sand dunes, the film Ab Ovo suggests animated movement in the landscape, through prompting the gradually disappearing forest to perform.
Jessica Warboys & Morten Norbye Halvorsen also performed within the exhibition over the Festival opening weekend, rendering the soundtrack of the film Ab Ovo live through improvisation and the introduction of additional objects.
