Common Objects is an ensemble of composers and improvisers lead by harpist Rhodri Davies including: John Butcher (saxophone and amplifier), Angharad Davies (violin) and Lee Patterson (amplified devices and processes). Cup and Ring is a live performance of a newly commissioned work using the cup and ring markings of ancient rock art as the graphic score. These enigmatic rock carvings were made by Neolithic and early Bronze Age people in Northumberland between 6000 and 3500 years ago, hundreds of panels survive today. Found on sedimentary sandstone, they consist of fragile concave holes, concentric circles, radiating lines and linked grooves.

This event is part of our Digging for Sound weekends of new commissions, concerts and walks focusing on the geology, topography and mining legacy of the North East England landscape.
