Thursday 15 March

Fri 2 March 2012 – Sun 4 March 2012

The Festival opening weekend focused on strategies used by artists to explore the concept of durational experience, through music, live performance and film across Newcastle and Gateshead.

From the sustained music of Phill Niblock, Yoshi Wada, Susan Stenger and John Cage at The Sage Gateshead; to Hanne Darboven’s century of composed time and Kenneth Goldsmiths’ weather diary; to the slow shifts from dawn to dusk in the films of James Benning and Sharon Lockhart.

This weekend included new commissions and UK premieres, plus special guest appearances and talks by the artists.

Highlights included: the pairing of films by James Benning and Sharon Lockhart screened as dusk descended over the Festival; performances by Yoshi Wada with the City of Newcastle Pipe Band; Kenneth Goldsmith’s epic reading in the unique environment of Morden Tower; and the closing concert of Hanne Darboven’s Requiem.
