AV FESTIVAL 12: NEW COMMISSIONS
1 March 2012 – 31 March 2012

AV Festival 12 commissioned 16 new works by artists including: Phill Niblock, Yoshi Wada, Hamish Fulton, Iain Sinclair, Susan Stenger, Jonathan Schipper, Kenneth Goldsmith, Torsten Lauschmann, Julien Maire, Attila Csihar, Chris Watson, Richard Fenwick and Vicki Bennett.

Many of the works responded to the regions history, landscape and heritage. Chris Watson worked in the Tees Estuary; Iain Sinclair explored urban developments in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool; and Hamish Fulton inhabited the disused carpark at Spillers Wharf. Yoshi Wada responded to maritime history in his installation, which included ship ventilation pipes from the Discovery Museum.

Other work was sited in non-arts venues: Susan Stenger’s sound installation resonated at Newcastle Civic Centre; Jonathan Schipper’s slow motion car crash was visible 24-hours a day from an empty shop; Kenneth Goldsmith’s reading reflected the literary history of Morden Tower; and Attila Csihar’s baritone vocals filled the Tyne Bridge Tower.

Other commissions were collaborative. For Radio Boredcast, Vicki Bennett invited over 100 artists to contribute to a 31-day continuous radio broadcast. Phill Niblock produced a new work with Gateshead artist Rhodri Davies. And Hamish Fulton ended the Festival with participants in his Slowalk.
