Café Carbon is a video installation of a musical performance that considers the consumption and production of food from pre-historic times to the present day. Gina Birch, Kaffe Matthews and Hayley Newman, aka The Gluts, performed Café Carbon in the streets, bars and restaurants of Copenhagen during the 2009 Climate Summit. Wearing strangely fashionable up-cycled carbon-coloured costumes, the group invited the public to select songs from an indulgent menu including; starter (Stone Cold Soup); main (A Grand Buffet); and dessert (Sanity or Madness). The Gluts performed Cafe Carbon live at Star and Shadow Cinema during the festival.

The Gluts is a group made up of three London-based artists: Hayley Newman, Kaffe Matthews and Gina Birch. Their collaboration started with Café Carbon, a musical performed on the streets of Copenhagen during the United Nations Climate Summit in 2009. Hayley Newman is a visual artist, she has performed and exhibited at Matt’s Gallery, London; The Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; and the Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva. Kaffe Matthews has been making and performing new electro-acoustic music worldwide since 1990, she has released 6 solo CDs on the label Annette Works. In 2006 she received an Award of Distinction, Prix Ars Electronica. Gina Birch is an English musician and filmmaker, best know as a founding member of The Raincoats.
