Thu 28 February 2008 – Sat 8 March 2008

AV Festival 08 commissioned three special FM radio stations in Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough, and hosted a public radio rally. Broadcasting throughout the Festival, each station challenged the programming conventions of traditional radio, becoming site-specific on-air environments for sound art, radio art and experimental music.

In Newcastle, the Festival broadcast on Newcastle community radio station NE1FM, with a live on-air radio station based at the Discovery Museum. In Sunderland, the broadcast was from the Media Centre at Sunderland University. The programming was by radio artists Knut Aufermann, Sarah Washington, DinahBird and Jean-Philippe Renoult.

In Middlesbrough, Resonance FM, the UK’s only radio art station, broadcast daily from mima. Highlights included a special broadcast of the War of the Worlds radio play, to celebrate its 70th Anniversary.
