AV Festival 08 produced three special opening nights of exhibition previews and live performances in Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Sunderland. The official gala launch of the Festival took place at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead for the premiere of the new commission, Variations VII.

The Newcastle Late & Live included the launch of exhibitions at the Hatton Gallery, Discovery Museum, alt.gallery and Castle Keep. In Middlesbrough Late & Live included exhibition tours of Now Hear This, a reception for Atlas of Electromagnetic Space and the concert A Marriage of Shadows. The Sunderland Late & Live included the launch of exhibitions at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, NGCA, Design Centre and Reg Vardy Gallery, and a live performance by Chris Watson.
