Before the internet, there were people who chatted to each other on the radio. These amateur radio 'hams’ formed a worldwide community and a pool of communications expertise. Many of them are still out there - the UK has 65,000 licensed radio amateurs. Waygood, a gallery and artist studios in Newcastle, created a new Arts Amateur Radio Club to explore the creative possibilities of the medium. The results of this project were shown in the Radio Rally in Grainger Market, where people were able to put faces to the voices they hear on air. In addition The Radio Society of Great Britain’s mobile radio shack, GB4FUN, were on hand to enable the uninitiated to get some hands-on radio experience.
