AV Festival 08 commissioned a special FM radio station in Sunderland, in collaboration with Andy Cartwright of Soundscape Productions and international visiting radio artist, Knut Aufermann. Broadcasting from the state-of-the-art radio studios at the Media Centre in Sunderland, Soundscape FM challenged the programming conventions of traditional radio, becoming a site-specific on-air environment for experimental sound art and radio art. Highlights included Disfunctional Radio and an Audio Art Gallery of the air.

Biography
Knut Aufermann was born in Hagen, Germany. He studied chemistry, audio engineering and sonic arts at Middlesex University. From 2002-2005 he was the station manager of Resonance 104.4fm in London, now he is active across Europe as a musician, radio artist, organiser, curator, consultant and workshop leader. Their works have been broadcast in 12 countries on 28 different radio stations. He is a founder member of the international Radia network of independent cultural radio stations.

Since 1983 Soundscape Productions have been creating programmes for BBC Radio and other broadcasters. Andy Cartwright’s own productions have been nominated for broadcast awards including: a Sony Radio Academy Award in 2006 for Voyages and his experimental programme Then-Now  was a World Medalist for Best Editing at the New York Radio Awards in 2007.
