AV Festival 08 coincided with Middlesbrough’s annual Northern Screenwriters Conference, which, in the past, had attracted speakers of the calibre of Tony Grisoni (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), Peter Straughan (Sixty-Six) and Paul Fraser (A Room For Romeo Brass).
Northern Screenwriters Conference 2008 was a two-day event aimed at helping new and experienced writers gain a better understanding of how to maximise their chances of finding and sustaining employment in the television and cinema industries. The Conference was directed by BAFTA nominated writer Ian Fenton. Delegates had a chance to learn from the country’s leading screenwriters. Speakers included Jimmy McGovern (The Street, Cracker), Danny Brocklehurst (Sorted, Shameless), and Lisa Holdsworth (New Tricks).
Ian Fenton has fifteen years experience in the film and television industry as a writer and director. His work has earned nominations and awards from BAFTA, the Royal Television Society, the San Francisco International Film Festival, and the London Short Film Festival. He regularly lectures and runs workshops on writing and creativity at a range of institutions and is an experienced mentor and consultant. He has chaired public events for New Writing North, the Tyneside Cinema, Northern Film & Media and St. Johns University, York.
