AV Festival 08 commissioned international radio artist Knut Aufermann to work with Newcastle community radio station NE1FM, to fill the Tyneside airwaves with resonant radio from around the world. The special live on-air radio studio was based in the Discovery Museum and broadcast 24hrs a day during the Festival on 102.5FM.

Together with fellow radio artists, Sarah Washington (UK), DinahBird (France) and Jean-Philippe Renoult (France), Aufermann broadcast a selection of radio art, sound art and experimental music. In addition special live projects included Slovenian artist Tao G. Vrhovec Sambolec’s project Reality Soundtrack, a moving sound intervention in public spaces. 25 or more participants walked together across Newcastle, all equipped with small radio receivers, playing a composition broadcast on NE1FM.

Biography
Knut Aufermann was born in Hagen, Germany. He studied chemistry, audio engineering and sonic arts at Middlesex University. From 2002-2005 he was the station manager of Resonance104.4fm in London, now he is active across Europe as a musician, radio artist, organiser, curator, consultant and workshop leader. He also plays improvised electronic music using various forms of audible feedback. Together with Sarah Washington he runs the project Mobile Radio investigating alternative means of radio production. Their works have been broadcast in 12 countries on 28 different radio stations. He is a founder member of the international Radia network of independent cultural radio stations.
