AV FESTIVAL 06: NEW COMMISSIONS
Thu 2 March 2006 – Sun 12 March 2006

AV Festival 06 commissioned nine new works by artists including: Anthony McCall, Ryoji Ikeda, Gina Czarnecki, Michael Nyman, Kenneth Rinaldo & Matt Howard, Andy Gracie & Brian Lee Yung Rowe, Claire Davies and Richard Fenwick.

Three of the new commissions responded to local contexts. Anthony McCall was inspired by the North East coastal landscape; Richard Fenwick’s new film was shot on Teesside; and Gina Czarnecki’s projected installation was designed especially for the Newcastle Civic Centre bell tower.

Other commissions focused on biotechnology and genetic engineering. Michael Nyman explored biotechnological science and cloning; Andy Gracie looked at living bacteria and artificial intelligence systems; and Kenneth Rinaldo pioneered new artificial life in his spider bots.
