David Cronenberg, Shivers, 1975.

Though he made a huge splash in 2005 with his acclaimed A History of Violence, Cronenberg’s reputation was built on a string of truly strange and disturbing films in the seventies and early eighties, of which Shivers is arguably the best.  Parasites designed in a laboratory to replace damaged organs escape in an apartment block and turn their human hosts into slavering, sex-mad zombies. Medical centre doctor Roger St Luc battles to prevent a sexual apocalypse, with no antidote and a hundred aggressors after him, he doesn’t seem to have a chance.
