alva noto (Carsten Nicolai) is one of the most important and critically acclaimed electronic musicians working today. For AV Festival 06 he presented a live audiovisual performance from his acclaimed Transall series. Nicolai creates precise rhythmic structures with electronic clicks and glitches as essential elements of his music, combining these pared-down electronic sounds with the rhythmic groove of hip-hop and R&B. In his powerful live audiovisual performances, Nicolai produces sublime, post-techno grooves, accompanied by his now legendary synaesthesic video.
Following his performance at AV Festival 06, Forma toured his work in 2006 to STUK, Leuven; Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts 2006, Adelaide; Moving Image Centre, Auckland; Performance Space, Redfern, Sydney and Nuits Sonores, Chapelle de la Trinité, Lyon.
Berlin based visual artist/electronic musician and producer Carsten Nicolai performs and records using the pseudonym alva noto. He has performed and exhibited in many of the world’s most prestigious spaces including Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; MOMA, San Francisco; NTT, Tokyo; Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin and the Venice Biennale. His exploration of the physicality of sound continues in his collaborations with Ryoji Ikeda, Mika Vainio, his celebrated recordings vrioon and insen with Ryuichi Sakamoto and in the pioneering raster-noton record label he co-founded. Nicolai won Ars Electronica Golden Nica prizes for Digital Music in 2000 and for Interactive Art in 2001.
