STAR AND SHADOW NIGHTS
Star and Shadow Cinema is one of Newcastle’s best loved venues and hub for the AV Festival 10 late night programme. Every night of the Festival from 9pm until late you can drink, watch, listen or dance to some of the best adventurous film, music and DJs.
For the Festival the creative team behind Star and Shadow transform the venue into The Astro-Botanical Garden: stepping back in time into a habitat resembling the set from a 1970s ecological sci-fi flick! From energy pyramids and geodesic domes to artificial forests, space travel and new age spirituality, all energies are welcome – high, low or no.
The Star and Shadow team promote three evenings reflecting their independent and co-operative spirit: the opening club night, a no electricity night and double bill of two classic global disaster films. Residents within the building, Polytechnic, present their regular democratic data-sharing event Datarama.
The vibrant Newcastle music scene takes over the main space for three nights. Leading music promoters No-Fi present Japanese musician Atsuhiro Ito with his musical instrument made from fluorescent lights, and PRMNT VIBES bring us the handspun Los Angeles-based group Lucky Dragons. Legendary club night Road to Rimini celebrate hi-energy dance floor fun with Rotterdam-based Moustache Records.
The Festival’s Recycled Film programme extends to the Star and Shadow including a special guest appearance by filmmaker Craig Baldwin, an evening devoted to cut-up culture, and a 16mm Recycled Film Lab for artists.
