Highlight: Charlemagne Palestine Trilogy
Charlemagne Palestine, Beast, 2008.
For almost seven years from the 1960s, he played carillon bells at St Thomas’ Church in New York. Returning to his original love of church bells and carillon and inspired by bell ringing heard during a visit to Newcastle in 2005, Palestine premieres two compositions for AV Festival 10.
As dusk falls, he performs a new work for the majestic carillon bells at Newcastle Civic Centre. Radiating across the city, the performance announces the beginning of AV Late & Live.
At the Church of St Thomas the Martyr, Palestine performs Schlingen Blängen, an immersive solo organ performance that slowly builds over six hours, with the tones magically vibrating and combining in the air. As a busy Saturday evening unfolds outside, this beautiful work offers an alternative hypnotic experience.
Fascinated by the English tradition of change ringing bells, Palestine will harness the energy of the ringers in the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas and St John the Baptist Church in Newcastle, to compose his first ever work for these tuned bells.
