AV Festival is delighted to announce that its first publication, Susan Stenger’s Sound Strata of Coastal Northumberland is now available for purchase here.

This fully illustrated 96-page clothbound book accompanies the Sound Strata exhibition tour, and includes a CD stereo mix of the installation. This is the first comprehensive solo publication about Susan Stenger and provides a detailed context for Sound Strata as well as background information on the artist’s practice.

The publication includes essays by award-winning nature writer Robert Macfarlane and the writer, curator and filmmaker Katherine Waugh. In addition it contains an interview between the artist, Mathieu Copeland and Rebecca Shatwell, and an annotated facsimile of Stenger’s working score for Sound Strata. It also includes a full colour reproduction of the original 1838 cross-section diagram of coastal geological formations by the mining engineer Nicholas Wood.

A CD insert with a stereo mix of Sound Strata is included at the back of the book. Mixed especially for this publication by Susan Stenger and Robert Poss, the CD enables those who have enjoyed the installation to listen again at home, and for those unable to travel to Northumberland, to appreciate this remarkable work.

Copies of the publication can be purchased online here for £20.

The publication is also available from NewBridge Books, The Laing Art Gallery shop, and Waterstones, all in central Newcastle.
